Isolation Transformer

An isolation transformeris a device that transfers electrical power from an alternating current (AC) power source to a device. It isolates the device from the power source, usually for safety reasons or to reduce transients and harmonics.

Isolation transformers can be useful in the following situations: 

  • Medical equipment
  • Electronic devices
  • Industrial settings
  • Sensitive transducers and instruments
  • UPS/inverter systems

Isolation transformers have the following properties: 

  • Decouple two circuits
  • Block transmission of DC signals
  • Allow AC signals to pass

Isolation transformers have symmetrical windings. The resistance between the primary and secondary is high, in the tens of megaohms
